A Screaming Man

A Screaming Man

N'Djamena, capital of Chad, present day. Adam, in his sixties, works as a swimming pool attendant at a luxury hotel. Proud of his job, happy with the stability in his life, he is nevertheless caught up in a series of misfortunes that quickly turns to tragedy. The drama of Un Homme Qui Crie (A Screaming Man) hinges on the passing of time. As Adam ages, he experiences a brutal social descent, as globalisation reaches deep into the heart of Africa, bringing a whole new wave of injustice to the downtrodden. The hotel is bought up by Chinese entrepreneurs and Adam loses his job to his own son. From that moment on, the film takes on a universal dimension. As the spectre of civil war menaces the country, Adam sends his son off to the army, in other words, straight to his death…Mythological references abound - Adam’s guilt, Abraham sacrificing his son, the powerlessness of David against Goliath, or of the citizen facing a dictatorship. With an almost documentary style, the Chadian director Mahamat- Saleh Haroun, gives his film’s themes a compelling, contemporary resonance.
